TILING TRICKY SPACES

Not every tiling project is straightforward. We are often called in when homeowners have been told a surface can't be tiled, a wall needs complete replacement, or a renovation will cost far more than expected. Many situations simply need a practical solution and the right combination of tiling, building, and problem-solving expertise.

Below are examples of some of ways we approach challenging projects and find ways to achieve a durable, professional result while avoiding unnecessary renovation costs wherever possible.

In this hallway project, the wall itself was significantly out of level, creating a difficult surface for achieving a professional tiled finish particularly with this type of tile. We took time to ensure a straight, clean finish that looked as though the wall had been built correctly from the very beginning.

TRANSFORMING WALLS THAT ARE NOT LEVEL

While some paint-on products suggest it may be possible to tile directly onto Seratone or hardboard, most experienced tilers will tell you there is a risk in that because in most situations, tiles should be fixed to a solid, stable substrate designed for the job. We find solutions when there are difficult areas to be tiled.

TILING OVER SERATONE OR HARDBOARD

The bathroom pictured here had deteriorating hardboard and Seratone linings around the bath that risked allowing moisture into the wall structure.

The homeowner had received renovation quotes involving a complete relining of the bathroom at a cost of many thousands of dollars. They were told this was the only realistic option.

Instead, we engineered a solution by installing fibre cement sheeting, mechanically fixing and sealing it, applying two coats of waterproofing membrane, and then tiling over it using an aluminium trim for a neat finish.

We used a similar approach in this kitchen, where replacing the existing hardboard would have meant additional plastering, painting, electrical work, and other costly trades. By combining tiling, joinery, and building knowledge, Mr Splashback was able to provide a practical solution that saved the homeowner thousands of dollars while still achieving a durable, professional result.
